Design of Riser Guards

Project involved detailed engineering and design of riser guards for several platform structures, including dynamic boat impact analysis (USFOS), preparation of design reports and IFC drawings.

The design of the riser guards was based on the following principles:

  • The need to provide geometry that prevents the vessel having a direct line of approach onto the risers.
  • Structural arrangements that provide sufficient energy absorption capabilities for the intended vessel.
  • The desire to provide joint capacities greater than the tubular member plastic moments, particularly for joints of the riser guards at the points of attachment to the legs.
  • Elimination of potential snagging points.
  • Ease of fabrication and installation
  • Avoidance of poor fatigue details
  • Minimization of additional environmental loading
